New (temporary) home

Contractual obligations have required me to transition race-related material to another site:

Monkey videos will still be posted here as I find time.

Why don't I get to do stuff like this?

Be careful what you wish for...

Yesterday I rolled out with the little punk who likes ripping my legs off (and his dad, of course). He has to kill it up every hill, and for some reason he thinks that the final 6 miles up the bike path has to be done at Mach 57. So after 70 miles with the power thingamagig reading in the 400s far too much, I complained to the corporate sponsor that what I really need this time of year are some long steady rides.

Today I met Mr. Aleto up in the boonies for a nice little excursion out in the hills and winds of the February Palouse. It was a nice, steady ride, 73 miles on the 'cross bikes. Just what I asked for. Except that he is kind of strong. Well, really strong.

Instead of looking down and seeing 400-something every time we hit a hill, but 150 something the rest of the time, I looked down to see 270 or so every time we did anything. Uphill, downhill, flat, eating cookies, taking a leak. For over 4 hours. I finally gave in at about mile 68 and dropped back to suck wheel with the vague hope that I might make it back home in one piece.

I did, but I can't walk down the stairs now.

a new year

I know some people think the new year begins on Jan. 1, but I disagree. On Saturday, I underestimated the depth of the snow and the strength of the wind, and overestimated the size of my breakfast, and so spent the final 30 minutes of my ride just a few inches in front of the bonkzilla. On Sunday, I underestimated the effect of two inches of snow on top of the Saturday-going-to-town-traffic compressed two inches of snow from Saturday, and so spent that ride mostly on the ground and frozen.

No, the new year doesn't begin until you've bonked, frozen your toes off, and thrown yet another training plan out the window. I believe this is the earliest I've ever abandoned a training plan, probably my earliest visit from the bonkzilla, but not my earliest misunderestimation of the amount of clothing I might need.

At least now I can focus on getting things done.
